Now it is starting to cold outside and Christmas time, I am thinking about a remote start . I was wondering what was a popular unit and if people have had problem with them, thanks

I always wondered how that would work with the glow plugs... Although my fathers 6.4 has a remote start as a factory option so it must not be that hard

I was looking at a couple of models and they just need to be diesel compatible. The one I liked was from code alarm but I don't remember what the model number was. You could adjust the time it turned power on to the time it cranks from 0-45 seconds to let the glow plugs warm up. It had a bunch of features that I wasn't as concerned with like the alarm features etc but one other nice thing was if you pulled up to a convenience store you could hit the one button take the keys out with the engine running and run inside. I just wanted to really find a reputable place for the install because I get a little nervous about future electrical problems if someone doesn't do it correctly.

i had a viper diesel compatible unit put in my 02.
works perfectly. glow plug timer is set for 45 seconds and crank timer is set for 6 seconds.
sometimes if it is real cold it will not start on the first try because the crank cycle timed out, but it has always started on the second try.
the diesel units are on a crank timer, unlike the gas units that turn the starter off with a tach signal.

Keferko - i just had linex of reading install the dei python. Pretty cool system and Brett the installer seems to know what he is doing. We did have a couple of small hurdles with a diesel, but we got past that.

I use CompuStar it works great.
Had it on my 04 F350 gas for a year. Then had swapped over to my 01 F350 diesel.
I had the guy who put it in do the swap. He set it go over the wait to start light four more seconds

I too have a Viper though I forget which model. It is set for GP's to cycle for 45 secs and the crank is set for I believe 4 secs but not positive. But like TJC said, it's on a crank timer so if it catches early, it stops cranking. Les, I would think that you may need to have him go longer than 4 secs past the WTS light. On my '03, we have a glow plug (a little coil looking thing) light, instead of a WTS but it is only illuminated for 10 secs or so. I think 15 secs of GP's being energized in NH, might not be enough. Do the '99-'01 trucks WTS light stay on longer than 10 seconds?

I also have a viper alarm and electric start installed by the PO. It's great until it starts to get cold out. It cranks the engine as soon as the WTS light shuts off which we all know isn't long enough for the GPs to be completely utilized. It will at random shut the truck off after its started then it will restart again. It's stupid. When it starts getting cold out I just run out and crank the truck with the key.

That sux John. I love mine. The main reason I got it was for the cool down feature. Mine is set to turn the truck off after 4 mins cool down time, if I engage the feature. At the time I got mine, I was looking at getting a turbo timer, because I was doing a fair amount of towing, and for less than the purchase price of the turbo timer, I could get the remote start installed. I have grown to love it both in summer and winter. I would take yours to a car audio store and have them program that glow plug time longer.

I would but truth be told I don't drive the truck in the winter. I'm sure some of the problem is my GPs need changeing. I have used mine as a turbo timer. I shut it off then hit the electric start and it'll run for 10 mins or so if I want it shut off before that I'll send one of the girls to hit the brake pedal lol.

That is the way I took it Les. That doesn't seem like enough for your climate to me. That has to be less than 20 seconds for sure. Am I missing something?

I would agree completely with this. I let mine go at least 20-30 seconds before starting. I guess if it's starting up and running, no harm done though?

mine is run time set for 20 minutes.
if you want to turn it off before it times out all you have to do is double tap the start button just like you do to start it. that will shut it off when in run mode.
