I have a 85 ford f150 with a 300 6 and i'm planning on doing a dsll swap. My question is what is the difference between the tfi coil and the dsll coil? Or is there a difference?
There is a difference. I would get a ds2 coil to match the ds2 system. Different coils draw different amounts of current. This puts different loads on the dsii ignition module, we do not want anymore load on the module than it can handle. Hot aftermarket coils can cause problems also.
People write in and say they use this coil or that with the dsii module with no problems, but some people do have problems with the modules not lasting.
Also make sure when you do your swap, you find the correct wire to run to the coil. I believe your TFI coil will have a blue/white wire going to it(check this). If it does, you do not want to use this wire for the dsii coil. You need to hunt around under the hood, most of these trucks have the correct red/green wire that was made for the dsii coil and has the resistance built into it the dsii system requires.
