HI. I am having problems with my EGR system. When I first start my truck in the morning it hesitates and nearly dies and then runs like a top with plenty of power until it warms up. Then it barley has any power at all and you can feel the engine jerking all the way up through the gears. Every once in a while it even backfires. It is really bad now that summer is here. Which makes me think that it has something to do with a temp sensor? I took my truck to Autozone and had them check the code for the engine light. I have a 2.3 litre in the truck. The guy told me that the code (i can't remember the number) was for the EGR valve, which they do not carry. I went to the dealer and he talked me into changing the DPFE sensor first. That did not solve the problem. I tried taking the vacuum line off of the EGR valve and did not notice any difference. I am strapped for money right now and I am trying to fix it myself. Thanks In advance for any help.
Ken

In the "Technical Information" Sticky Post there is a link to a list of OBDII trouble codes and their possible causes. I'm guessing that your code was P0401 and/or P0402 (EGR Flow Insufficient). Here is what is listed as possible causes for an EGR problem:
*Vacuum supply
* EGR valve stuck closed
* EGR valve leaks vacuum
* EGR flow path restricted
* EGR VR circuit shorted to PWR
* VREF open to DPFE sensor
* DPFE sensor downstream hose off or plugged
* EGR VR circuit open to PCM
* VPWR open to EGRVR solenoid
* DPFE sensor hoses both off
* DPFE sensor hoses reversed
* Damaged EGR orifice tube
* Damaged EGRVR solenoid
* Damaged PCM
