TPMS Compatibility and Reprogramming

I'm looking at a set of tires and rims for my 2004 Expedition that were dealer take offs from a 2013 F150. A few questions....do I have to worry that the newer TPMS sensors won't work on a vehicle that is 9 years older? From what I've seen it looks like you need a specialized tool to get the system to recognize the new sensors, anyone have experience with this and what it might cost to have a shop do it? I really don't want to wind up with sensors that can't be programmed to my vehicle and if there is a lot of jerking around with this it is winds up being more cost effective to just buy new tires for my existing rims. Thanks in advance.

What about taking the tires to a tire shop and having them install the correct sensors?

It's an option, but I'm guessing that since I'm on the original sensors on mine that they are going to be shot sooner rather than later. The attractiveness of the set is they are mounted and balanced with almost new sensors for a good price. The more messing around I do the more it takes away from the attraction.

It couldn't hurt to call a tire shop and ask them if they're compatible or if you need to install the old style sensors. They usually have the TPM sensors on hand, just in case they have to replace them when installing tires. If you have to swap them they can also give you an idea of the cost.
