Well, Ford stopped making 6V trucks after 55. So if it is truly a 6V engine it would be pre 56.

Well I know from my vin decode that this isn't the original engine so I don't know if its a newer one they swapped back to 6volt when they installed it or if it really is a true 6volt.

Should there be a date code somewhere on the block?

Okay guys, got a little into the engine today. Boy is there a lot of dirt and grime caked on the outside of this thing but so far inside in my opinion looks okay. I found out the truck was already converted to 12V based on the ignition coil so that is a plus since I was going to have to rewire the whole truck anyway. Heres the pics.

I still cant find any numbers on the engine block to help me determine what year it is possibly from but I have the 223 part figured out now thanks to your help.

Also I removed about 8 bolts or so from the intake/exhaust but they wont come off. I believe 3 from each side and two in the middle. I cant figure out where any other bolts are located unless its just being held on by some super dirt. Any help with this? Secret bolts?

Forgot... I wasnt able to get the head off today because of time but I did pull the spark plug and look into the cylinder that way. Walls are nice and clean and no rust at all.

Ford used two different valve adjustment setups during the 223 and Y-block V8 years. The earlier engines used an adjustment with a lock nut. The later engines used interference threads without a lock nut. Your engine has the later style except for the second rocker back. The earlier style is usually installed when the self locking threads get worn a bit and no longer hold adjustment. I prefer the earlier style.

Is there play between the rockers and the shaft?

There is a minimal amount of play in every other rocker. The ones with no play also have the valve springs being pushed down.

Is this bad? If so can it be fixed by tightening it down?
