Anybody ever tried some preventative maintenance on the radiator support area that is prone to cracking? I've got a radiator support i'm putting in that already has a crack on one side but other side is ok for now. I was thinking about maybe reinforcing each side while I'm fixing the crack. Any thoughts?
I've seen guys drill a series of holes in the radiator support and reinforce it with some small angle iron as a repair to an already cracked unit, I don't know why that wouldn't work as a preventative measure as well.
Anyone have pics of the Radiator support? My inspection mechanic says mine is rusting. When I removed radiator to replace water pump, I thought the radiator support was the horizontal member that runs from rh frame member to lh frame member and is located directly beneath the radiator. It has two bands of rust, each about 1/3 of the way from each end. I didn't think it looked too bad, but I am not sure now I was looking at the part my mech referenced.
A couple of pictures would be great, if anyone has some.
Here's a picture. The piece you're describing is the part he is referring to. They tend to rust the worst right where they sit on top of the mounts that go on the frame rails. You can see the part that usually rusts out from under the truck. It's a goo bet if you live in PA that your mechanic is right and it's getting pretty crusty.
