Low oil pressure problems

Hello everyone, this is my first post on these forums and I am excited to start reading through all the posts on here. I am pretty new to ford trucks so any information will be much appreciated.

I just bought a 94 f250 5.8l and its an awesome truck, but it needs a fair bit of work. My most recent problem has been a drop in oil pressure, or at least the gauge is at rock bottom. I actually watched the gauge fall as I was driving. One moment it was reading normal and the next it was past low.

My first thought was the oil pressure sending unit which I am working on replacing right now, but I am having a ton of trouble with it. the special socket for it will not fit in the limited space around it and i cant get a wrench on it. any suggestions for that?

also any other thoughts about what might be the problem would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to FTE! As you'll probably see, there's a lot of great info and people here.

I haven't had to do the oil pressure switch on my 5.8, so I'm unfortunately not going to be much help with that... However, the oil pressure gauges on our trucks are highly inaccurate. Once you figure out how to get the sender out, it may not be a bad idea to put a mechanical test gauge on it to get an accurate oil pressure reading.

Hopefully someone will come along soon and help out with sending unit removal tips.

On these year trucks, the factory oil gauge is not really a functional gauge at all, it will read mid point when the engine oil pressure is over 6psi. The oil sending unit is just a switch that opens over 6psi oil pressure.

Good chance that sending unit is going bad, but before you replace it, read up on installing a mechanical oil pressure gauge. That will tell you much more than the simple "idiot" gauge will ever tell.

When the gauge dropped, was the engine hot and at idle? Could mean the engine is wore out in the bearings. But best is test with mechanical oil gauge 1st.
