Angry Big 7.3 Engine Problem...HELP !

It's been a while since posting here but.... I thought if I could get an answer this is the place to do it !

My F-250 Diesel three weeks a go began running extremely rough so I called my mechanic who said bring it over...almost didn't make it. Said he'd look at it tomorrow. He called the next day and said both gaskets and the harness were toast and recomended changing all the glow plugs. Got the parts, installed them...still runs bad. He suggested 3 injectors could be bad...found some used ones known to be good and installed them to no avail. Now he says the firing of the injectors is erratic. Still no success. I have 384K miles on the truck.

Could the injector controller be the problem ? If not could anyone offer some advice. I would really appreciate some guidance.

Thanks !!

Yeah, it sounds like your mechanic is a parts changer. What kind of diagnosis has he done? Has he scanned it for codes? What are we working with here?

As you say...Parts Changer...As far as diagnosis..very little other than talking to other parts changers to compare notes.

I guess what I'm asking is for a logical step by step process to ascertain the real problem without a lot of guessing and maybe. Where should the process begin ?

I mentioned that I've bought the two VCG's and harness plus glow plugs and the mechanic replaced three injectors (used but supposedly working).

I thought, at least, I would check out you guys for some true educated advice. I appreciate the help !

P.S. If he scanned it I don't know the outcome...

Well, you need to have someone scan this truck and give us codes to work with. The symptoms can be a lot of things, but lets start with some basics. How is the oil level in the HPOP? How is your fuel filter, when was the last time it was changed? Have you done the in-tank mods? Do you have the ability to check fuel pressure? You say it's running poorly, is it smoking, low power, etc.?

The oil level & fuel filter are good (change EO oil change) as far as running it isn't...it apears the VCG and harness were burned (shorted some how) they have been replaced.

The code answers will have to come tomorrow or a.s.a.p.

For the price of the CPS, it's sure worth the troubleshooting effort. That part causes so many different symptoms.

Hi!
I know this may sound kind of simple but I have had this happen repeatedly with both of my trucks (1999 & 2000, 7.3 diesel)...starts running really rough out of the blue and I think the engine is dying! We have had to replace just the fuel filter or the fuel pump filter and then it is right back to normal!

Best wishes.
