I hear that a cam is very cost effective. If you are carbed (i assume so, because you said 351 rather than 5.8), an intake and 4bbl will give you more power when you need it and better MPG if you don't get a lead foot after you get those extra horses

87 -should- be EFI. At least from the factory, anyway. The speed density system isn't too friendly to modifications, but if you could swap in a later mass-air system, you would have more room to play. There is a do-it-yourself EFI setup, that is speed density, but also modification friendly, and capable of supporting multi-port fuel injection. Once you get the computer system straightened out, a cam, headers, 600cfm throttle body, and free-flowing exhaust will net you around 250hp. If you want more, you will have to dig into the engine, and change out the heads for performance ones, and possibly rebuild with higher compression pistons. In Desktop Dyno, I got a 351w to peak 300hp with Trick-Flow style heads, and 9.5:1 compression, on top of the mentioned mods.

the 351w ho does have a four barrel.i think in 88 they went efi for the 351.do you know what compression ratio this engine has?
how much could i bump that up and still cruise around town and pull a camper.was thinking about a new intake also but don't know which one yet?do you know what cfm of the factory holly is?
how big of a cam should i go?i think the engine came out with around 210 hp so i would be happy with 100 more or so.
this will be the first engine i've built other than stock so all help is wonderful

You can get specific performance info for your engine in the 351W engine forum.
