07 explorer tranny fluid

How do I check the transmission fluid level and/or add fluid to a 2007 Explorer EB with 4.0L. I can't locate the fill tube anywhere. I am thinking of buying this rig for my daughter and there is no owner's manual. Thanks for any help.

The transmissions your Explorer is considered a sealed transmission and does not have a fill tube. The family of 5-speed automatics they use in the Explorer/Mountaineer/Aviator, Lincoln LS, Thunderbird, and probably a few other models has not contained a fill tube since about 2000.

Instead there is a stand pipe/drain/fill plug combination in the transmission pan. The expected way to check the fluid level is to get the vehicle on a level hoist, remove the center portion of the combo plug, and if fluid comes out, it's either hot or overfull. If no fluid comes out, you can add fluid (using the appropriate adapter) then check to see if fluid trickles out. Once the fluid stops trickling out, you are full.

I have a buddy with an 06 explorer. This good to know, thanks.

Is there an indicator on the dash to alert of low fluid level, or low pressure?

No indicator in the instrument cluster, although I suppose if it gets low enough, other issues will cause the Information Center to identify some type of message related to the transmission. Shifting issues would likely be noticeable first though.

Thanks shorod for your answer. I finally found a site to download the owner manual, so now daughter has it for reference. Good stuff on this forum site.

Yes it is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. You have to lay under your truck with it running, try not to burn yourself on the hot exhaust and hot trans fluid pouring out, try not to spill on yourself or ground.... just to check the fluid. STUPID!!!!

pretty much have to take it to a shop with a hoist to have the trans fluid checked - WOW.
