hissing from motor

When I am driving and the turbo isn't boosting, I am getting a hissing from the motor area. It doesn't do it while idling, just when driving under 40mph. Just started within last couple of days. Thought it was exhaust leaking, but I can't seem to find a leak. Sounds like its coming from engine compartment.

Do you have a boost gauge? You could be having 'some' boost (under this driving condition) and possibly a boost leak. If you're not familiar with the drill, search on 'boost leak detector' and build one and do the test.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever heard a boost leak over the clatter of the engine, however.

You have a boost leak, an intercooler boot is off, ripped, or otherwise malfunctioned. Did it happen to follow a lout pop sound?

When my truck blew off a IC boot the truck fell right on its face!

When I see "hissing" I immediately think EBPV.

Where do you live - did it just get cold in your area? Does the hissing go away after the truck is warmed up, or is it always there?

I am thinking the same thing. This is the time of the year when we start to see a lot of Glow Plug and 'my truck is hissing' threads.

If you tap the brake or the gas the ebpv should drop out & the hiss should stop. Sounds more like a leak somewhere

It kinda depends on the specific model as there are a few different versions out there. It's possible for the valve to be closed even while cruising at a steady speed or while downhill braking.

My '99 never applies the EBPV while driving...it only works when the engine is at idle. My friend's Excursion will come on even while driving around the neighborhood so there must be at least two different programs out there....maybe more.

He's in Alaska, per his user profile.
Understand they been having a bit of cool weather up there for the last few days.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

EBPV while cruising up to 40mph? That is a new one for me.

Yeah I was surprised to learn about that myself.
I will try and attach page 4 from the 1999.9 update technical papers that talks about the function. It explains when the vehicle is in a steady state or the EBP decreases then the regulator can and will activate the valve even while going down the highway as long as engine oil temperature is low.

I had the same thing happen today. Had a friend keep the idle at around 2500 and stuck my hand around the connection between the turbo and the intake manifold. That's where I found my leak

Damn if it doesn't. Mine has never done that, but when it's that cold, I tend to let mine warm up. Of course, it's never Alaska cold when it's cold here.

My truck doesn't operate like that either. The moment I touch the brake to drop the thing in gear the valve opens and the idle speed drops to normal. This is why I think there must be several different programs out there that control things differently. My friend's Excursion closes the valve even while driving down the highway which I thought was weird but we checked out the truck and found nothing wrong. I then re-read the technical papers and discovered that the EBPV function has been modified over the years.

If you read the description in the 1999 PC/ED manual and compare it to the description in the 2003 manual it will be worded differently. At least I think they were different...I'll have to pull out the books and check again to be sure.

When my '03 had an EBPV, it would close and hiss while driving down the road before the truck warmed up.
