Wind Resistance: 99-07 Tow Mirrors vs. 08+ style

Ever since I installed the 08 style mirrors, I've noticed a huge disturbance in the "force".

Just wondering how much of an effect the larger 08 style mirrors have on MPG. They have a much more pronounced effect on wind drag. I did the lift, 35's, and mirrors pretty much all at once, so I don't have any solid data points for reference. My MPG's dropped a bit, but that can also be attributed to the speedo being off.

anyone else notice this?

I didn't notice a difference. I log every fuel up. My personal record was 20.7 mpg before the mirrors and 20.7 after. although the first was over 1000+ miles and the other over 200 miles.

Yeah, I haven't really seen any difference either. I don't have numbers in front of me now though.

Havnt got the 08+ mirrors on the Ex yet, but I did my F350 several years ago, and the mirrors by themeslves did not change mileage at all. And that is on a 02 F350 CCSB 4x4 with 5.4 and 6spd man. So I doubt your V-10 will see anything at all change for just the mirrors. Now the Tires are a whole nother story...

I'd blame the lift, 35"s and speedo difference for the MPG change, not the new mirrors. That's what I blame for my MPG changes, along with the 4.88's. I don't think I'll be seeing any more of those near 17MPG tanks like it used to be able to pull down.

If you get the one with remote control to fold in, fold it on the highway when you don't need to use it then the truck will slip thru the air like shark in water and it also reduce wind resistance.

We had the non towing mirrors and I just put on the towing mirrors (pre-08 ) and noticed a drop in wind noise in the cabin. Don't know if it is just in my head or not but seems quieter. The wife didn't want to spend the extra hundred dollars or so on the 08 style ones. Towing mirrors do make it hard to get in and out the garage though (single 9' door) they clear by an inch on each side.

I noticed nothing when I went from the paddle to the older style towing mirrors FWIW.

I'm not blaming the mirrors for the MPG drop. I know full well the tires/lift did that. the drop is pretty insignificant anyways because I have the 4.30 gears to help offset the 35's

what I'm really noticing is the huge increase in wind disturbance vice that from the 99-07 style. I had them on my F-250 and the Ex originally. I typically drive with my arm on the door sill and "fly" my hand when I'm bored in the wind. with the 08 style mirrors there is a vacuum there in the area immediately behind the mirror...for lack of a better way to explain. they displace more air it seems because my hand "flights" aren't nearly as much as they were pre-mirror swap.

nothing major...just makes me wonder how much extra resistance they add to the overall drive. still have to say I love the 08+ style

LOLOL! I do that too, but only when the traffic around me is scarce so I don't induce a laughing fit in drivers and cause an accident!

never bothered me. 6'3" and 260 lbs redneck with my camo Texas Longhorns hat and monster Excursion...lets just say that most people's gaze seem to skim past me. especially in traffic

I also have a ton of fun jamming out when a good country song comes on. I have no shame in traffic. lol

I usually play music from my iPod, but I have a CD of "Chicks Dig It" by Chris Cagle that makes my sub bump!
