I noticed my truck hard starting lately as the temps have dropped and a lot of smoke at startup. I want to test the Glow Plugs. Is there a recommened writeup for performing the test and replacing the Glow Plugs, maybe with pics?
If I find bad GP's should I replace them all or just the ones that are bad?
I haven't found a solid write up with pics, but the procedure for testing the voltages is fairly simple. Just pull the 9 pin connector at the Valve Cover Harness, then put the hot leg of a multimeter against the four outermost prongs and the ground against the middle prong in the harness. You can also test at the 42 pin connector as well.
Here is a thread I've found helpful. It shows some pictures as well as gives some direction, probably easier to understand then mine. It also gives torque specs for the glow plugs should they need replaced, as well as specs for injector hold down bolts and rocker arm bolts that should be checked while you're in there. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...w-plugs-2.html
If you find bad glow plug(s) in each cylinder bank, I would just replace them all in that bank at the very least. I'm a do it once and be done type of person. Have you ruled out a bad GPR? I'd hate for you to pull the VC's unnecessarily.
EDIT: Tact beat me to it. In my defense I was typing on an iPad.
