97 460 Upgrades

Hello-

I have a 97 E-350 with a 460. I'm looking to add some performance. A friend of mine said the following, what do you all think?

First thing to do is a good exhaust, and a K&N air filter or the like in the stock airbox. A 3 inch single exhaust with the cats removed helps tremendously. Headers are a huge improvement over the exhaust manifolds, but finding them for the van chassis might be an issue. Put a 180 degree thermostat in. Bump your ignition timing up to 12-13 degrees initial from the 10 it's set at from the factory (you'll have to disconnect a tiny chip called the SPOUT connector from your wiring harness to set base timing accurately-it's not a big deal, just Google where it's located on your van and you'll find it) Bypassing the smog pump with a shorter drive belt and closing off the hose that connects to the exhaust system is an easy thing to do while you're doing the exhaust upgrade. Next is a fuel pressure regulator set to 40 psi-BBK makes them. Order one for a 95 Mustang with a 5.0. Do these and it'll make a different animal out of it. After this, there's camshafts that work with the computer, ported intakes, and bigger throttle bodies.

Hey there! One thing your friend suggested, may not work for your vehicle. If you have a 1997 7.5 Liter engine, I don't think you have a Smog pump(air injection pump). You should have a Mass air engine. Also, if you have a mass air engine, I don't think you will notice any difference by advancing the timing over the 10 degrees of factory initial timing. Also, keep in mind that you may be violating local and federal laws by "losing" the Cat Convertor. Dale

Thanks. I don't have any legal issues with removing the cats but from what I understand they're not that restrictive when functioning normally so removing them is something I probably wouldn't do anyway. Thanks.

Have done several things to work on your question as I have a 97 F-350 at altitude.

I removed the air horns and plumbed in same size tubes that were straight. Welded a nipple onto on of the tubes for the air supply to IAC. Also used the large KN filter for off road. TB spacer seemed to help on mountain pulls. Mileage is not great with the 28 ft box trailer on back. Maybe 6. But open and empty I have got 13. Have 3:55 gears. E40D. 4X4.

Ah, the air intake idea sounds good. Any pics of what you did? The van already has a stock sized K&N filter but I'd like to do a more radical intake setup like the one you describe.

As for mileage, that's not my concern at all. I'm looking for throttle response performance enhancements, if I said that right. Go-fast stuff, not fuel efficiency boosts. I'm planning to have this van until either it or I rust away (and frankly, I have more rust that it does, which is zero). I'm planning some cool A/V work for the inside, and I want to do some cool go-fast mods too. I appreciate all replies.

No. No real pics to show you.
just think of straight pipes in place of the plastic tubes in the middle of the air intake from the fender to intake. Just weld a nipple on one so IAC gets air from it. I did wrap in an insulator blanket to keep it cool as it was metal and gained heat fast.
