Re-ring freshen up
I am doing a budget restoration on a '75 F100 4x4 I bought. The engine was supposed to be a fully rebuilt 390 but turned out to be a sludgy 360 with new valve covers and VC gaskets. No matter. I got the whole truck with brand new tires for scrap prices anyway. When i got the truck it had the hood off and the carburetor-less engine wrapped in a tarp with no spark plugs in it. i decided to tear into the engine before trying to start it. The bores are stock size but dirty. No rust or pitting. There is a barely perceptible ridge at the top of the cylinders. I was planning on cleaning the bores up with a flex hone and installing new rings and main/rod bearings without paying for any more machine work. Anybody else re-ring a FE motor with good results or should I bite the bullet and have it bored?
The engine came with an iron 4 barrel manifold and a new-in-box Edelbrock electric-choke 600 cfm carb. I rebuilt the factory heads and had them planed down .015.
