Larger Fresh Air Intake off of a 4.9L

I have a 87 5.0L 2WD E4OD XLT Lariat and I have been wanting to get the larger "snorkel" and I finally found one.

My 5.0 has a foil part that originates at the exhaust manifold then terminates at my current fresh air snorkel. Does the foil transfer heat from the manifold to the snorkel?

I also have the 2 vacuum hoses on the top of my air box but this is no big deal as I will take the necessary parts from the 4.9L.

Does eliminating this foil "pipe" cause any problems?

Thank you!

It sound like you have a heat riser off a carb engine

That's why I'm confused. He should have EFI.
That is unless someone "converted" it back to carb

4.9L Airbox

Hello and good morning.

I do not know how to post pictures but I have the instructions from another member using Photobucket.

It is a unique setup and when I go to the boneyard today I will look for another. My 5.0L has the 2 vacuum lines: (1) running from the top of the airbox to the heat riser diverter on TOP of the snorkel with an approximately 2" foil pipe directly under the heat riser diverter that runs to a heat shield connection attached to the exhaust manifold. There is no problem as the 4.9L has only the snorkel and nothing else.

The vacuum line in question (red), runs from the top of my stock air box towards the firewall with a check valve in the center and then runs inside a wire "cover". There is a red vacuum line that comes off of the top of the Fuel Injection Plenum which may be the same line but I have to confirm this.

I have 3 manuals; a reprint of a genuine Ford Shop Manual specific to 87, a Haynes covering 80-96 including the Bronco and finally a Chilton which covers 87-96 Pickups and Broncos.

Not one of them shows my 5.0L setup? The truck was manufactured in the Twin-Cities Plant in March of 1987. I purchased it in October of 2008 from the son whose father had recently passed who bought it new so I am the second owner.

Thanks and take care.

Hello and good morning dustybumpers.

The truck is from the factory "stock". As I stated previously, I will check out some of the other trucks at the boneyard.

The eighth digit on my VIN is N which designates 5.0L EFI and the 10th digit is H which designates 1987.

The final five digits are 84529 which I believe means the vehicles produced. Perhaps this includes the F250, F350.

Hope this helps.

4.9L Donor Truck

Hello dustybumpers.

The 4.9L is the donor as it has a much larger snorkel for fresh air intake and no exhaust heat diverter. I was informed by one of the members long ago to get either this one or one off of a 7.5L.

I hope that this information will help.

Thanks!

The actual filter housing stayed pretty much the same all f series. Earlier models had the air intake beslde the radiator in the core support. Later models had a snorkel type set up that sat right under the hood, on top of a core support
I thought I had a picture of that one, but I couldn't find it

Hello again dustybumpers.

I know what you are referring to as I have seen each setup at the boneyard.

This particular (4.9L) snorkel receives fresh air from a cut out just behind the grille and is attached with a fastener. The nose is curved so as not to allow any debris to enter into the snorkel.

I have to learn how to use Photobucket so maybe I can send some photographs. I saved the page with complete instructions from a representative from Photobucket.

Thanks!

Boon

Take care

This is not how my setup is. I have the large "smooth" intake hoses that run to the Throttle Body.

The top of your Air Box is smooth where mine has the 2 aforementioned vacuum lines.

Yester I discovered (2) approximately 3/16" holes in the bottom of the box below the air cleaner element. They are centered exactly and 1 is on the engine side and the other is on the driver's side if you will.

Thank you for the help!
