Temp. control switch in heater hose?

I have a '72 Ranger with 101,000 miles. Recently, the shut-off switch that is within the heater hose that goes to the heater core rusted thru and started leaking antifreeze all over the engine compartment. As a short-term fix, I replaced the heater hose altogether (and all of the other water lines, too), but now I always have coolant circulating in my heater core, and it's starting to warm up around here and I'm getting hot!

Where do I find this piece--the Ford dealer? Some aftermarket place?

Parts stores (Like Napa) usually have them or can get them.

I found that the stock heater switch didnt go a very good job of turning the heat off in the summer, so I plumbed a regular valve inline in the heater hose.
It gets opened in the fall and closed in the spring.

But make sure that it isn't PVC, that stuff will melt or crack I'm told. For now, mine has a piece of copper tubing connecting both hoses and nothing to the heater core. When It gets cold, I'll hook the heater core back up.(gives me an excuse to go wrenching on my old Ford )

Any local parts store should have the valve.

For some reason both of my trucks have sticky valves and won't turn off without opening the hood and manually doing it. It has already tried kinky the control cable...and I dont want that to happen.

One was replaced, but I think it is just getting old and it just doesn't work very well. I wish they had a better version.

You can get a metal valve or a plastic one. I like the plastic one. It is not going to rust or stick like the metal one. Haven't had one melt yet.

Make sure the valve is secured to the firewall or valve cover so the cable has something to pull against. I have never seen a "stock" truck so I have no idea were Ford originally attached these things except they come with an attachment point on the valve.

Temp. control switch in heater hose?

I went to the Ford dealer today and they actually listed the part as "current," much to the surprise of the parts guy (who wasn't very nice--why am I not as important as a customer with a new vehicle, since mine ARE all Fords, just "vintage"?!). Anyway, it's been ordered and should be here tomorrow or Wednesday. I'll let you know how well it works and a part # if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the help!

Ford's part number would be great; I'm about to go crawling under the hood of my F100 pretty soon here.

What did it cost? I probably need to get a new cable too though, mine is about frozen from the rust.

Make sure the valve is secured to the firewall or valve cover so the cable has something to pull against. I have never seen a "stock" truck so I have no idea were Ford originally attached these things except they come with an attachment point on the valve.

The valve HANGS in middle air being supported by just the hoses. The mounting part is for the cable only. The worst part is the "closed" rotation is PUSH with the cable. This makes it hard sometimes and makes the cable want to kink. If the operation was reversed I think it would work great. But thats just ME .

I got mine at shucks auto (Kragen) about $12 - also I had a regualar choke cable rigged up on it to open/close it- it wouldn't close the valve all the way, very stiff.

Make sure the cable is well lubed, makes a big difference.

How about sharing some part numbers? I hate going to the parts store and asking some of these so called parts counter people for parts. ie, (Me) I need a distributor cap for a 390. (Them) Uh, does it have A/C? Uh, is it 2wd or 4wd? Power Steering? etc. etc.

Here's the part number for the vavle: C3UZ-18495-A. It looks the same, but I haven't tried to install it yet--maybe this weekend if I'm not too busy with work.
