My truck has always started hard when cold (below freezing). It takes 2 to 3 cycles of the plugs if it starts at all. Plugged in for a couple hours it pops off as fast as I can turn the key.
I have all new glow plugs, and have verified that they work. The truck turns over very fast. I have great compression. The truck has new return lines/orings/olives and an electric fuel pump. I am getting fuel, because when the truck is cranking I get a lot of white smoke. I am running out of things to replace.
My pump and injectors appear to be original with 230k miles on them. Is my truck going to start better with new injectors/pump, or should I drive it to the bottom of a lake?
You've already gotten about 130k more miles on the IP and injectors then what most say they will get so if I was a betting man I'd say that with a fresh fuel system and properly timed it would start right up.
verify that the gp controller is functioning correctly, watch the dome light, it will dim when the key is turned on and stay dimed for 8-12 seconds then blink quickly for up to two minutes then stop. if the gp controller has failed, one of the default failures, is to a one time 4 second gp function. this will require you to turn the key off then back on several times to get the engine to start. remember the WTS lite may only blink at this time. other failures may not give any glow or WTS lite. if the engine will start right up with block heater, it tells you that it is not a fuel problem. all low compression diesel's will be more difficult to start in the cold, that's why they have block heaters. get a timer ($20) for your block heater if you want to save power, heater draws 6-9amps depending on wattage of your heater.
