Tune up causes stumbles upon acceleration!?!?!

I just acquired a 1991 Ford F150 with a 300 6 cylinder and 5speed trans. Ran pretty good but since I knew nothing about its history I did a full tune up. Cap, rotor, plugs, wires, o2 sensor, serp belt, oil, filter, air filter, pcv valve, breather filter. When I crank it up it purrs like a lil titty tat. Going down the road now under acceleration it stumbles. Back off and it is smooth. Idle is smooth. Acceleration stumbles. I bought the fuel filter but didn't get to it last night. I will be putting it on tonight but I doubt that has anything to do with it.

Any ideas?

since it ran fine before, it would be a good idea to go back and check your work ...

since it ran fine before, it would be a good idea to go back and check your work ... is the rotor seated properly ? cap screwed down properly ? plugs tightened ? plug wires all seated properly ? firing order correct ? also, make sure you didn't knock off a vacuum line or break one of the plastic nipples that they connect to (speaking from experience here) .

also, with such crappy parts being made these days, if checking all these things doesn't make any difference, you could try swapping in the old rotor, and then cap, one at a time, and see if anything changes.

Good suggestions, joey2fords!

Thanks. One question. I told my "helper" to put dielectric grease on the distributor cap contacts. He put it on the contacts INSIDE the cap. Anybody know if this is bad!?

I don't know that it is bad. I usually put a very small amount on the top and bottom sides of the rotor and also use it (petroleum jelly) on all electrical connections.

The grease goes outside, under the wire boots. If you got it on the contacts inside the perimeter of the cap, that would be your problem. ~Bill

thanks for all the replies I found the problem... I wish I could upload a picture easily from my phone. the rotor is destroyed not sure how or why.

I love this truck / this engine cause this s.o.b is a champ to even run with this rotor button looking like this!

Clip on cap uses a different rotor than screw on cap-the two are similar but not interchangeable. Check you got the right cap/rotor combination. ~Bill

I was using correct part. Whatever the reason, it runs great now. Even with a little dielectric grease on the internal cap contacts ;-)
