ive gotta 81-f-100 with a 302..was wondering when i would need to change the cap and wires...all the points on the cap look a little worn out...what would new cap and wires cost? im trying to get the best fuel economy i can and i heard this helps. And what are some good brands to look for?..thanks
as a general rule, I change all the major tune up items on my truck once a year. plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, and a new MAP sensor and O2 sensor every 2 years. This general maintenance will keep your fuel economy up to where it should be. This maintenance along with frequent oil changes will keep your truck running for a long time.
The money spent in extra maintenance may be equal to the money it would cost for a major repair if you didn't, and therefore may not save any money in the long run, but think of the saved time and headaches if you take care of your truck
so don't worry about the cost of the distributor cap. If it needs one, then just buy one.

As for brands, I have always been partial to Blue Steak by Standard. Heavy duty, copper terminals, precision specs and they are blue!
