I was driving my truck home and it started to sputter. Turned off the highway and going down a long sweeping exit ramp it died. Started back up and ran but sputtered for about 4miles. Took off from a stop, ran fine for two blocks died again. Started back up one block later it died. Started back up went two feet and died. Now it won't start. Me and a friend went back and tried to get it to start. Sprayed some starter fluid it would start then die. Have spark at coil & first spark plug. No fuel pump noise when I turn key (but not start). Fuel pumps (dual tank) both come on when I jump the fp terminal on the DLC connector. So does this sound like a relay? I really need to get it started due to it is parked in a town about 12miles from my house. Would rather sped $20 on a relay then $60 on a tow then $20 on a relay. I did search for this topic and I think this confirms what happened to me-- http://www.fordtrucks.com/forums/sho...Bpump+%2Brelay
Unplug your Fuel pump relay and spray a little electrical cleaner on the connections then plug it back in. Sometimes the connections get a little crusty. It's worked for me before, finally I bought one and I think I only paid about $14.
If you do have to replace the relay, don't buy the OE Ford-type - they suck. Change to Bosch-type and you'll probably never have to worry about it again. Even if you do, they're MUCH cheaper & more common.
OK, tried a new relay and nothing. Cleaned it with elect. cleaner, still nothing. Could it be my tank selector switch? When I run the FP test I can flip the switch and hear both fuel pumps running. I guess I 'm going to have to get it towed now, oh well.
I believe an 88' F-150 has a low pressure fuel pump in each tank and one high pressure pump mounted on the frame. Maybe what your hearing are the low pressure pumps and the high pressure pump is shot. They didn't start putting the high pressure pumps in the tank until around 90'.
