Hey all, ive been getting a "tea pot whistle" on medium load on my 08 6.4. The dealer said the turbo down pipe is cracked and the cab must come off. Is there anyway i can replace it myself? Can it be done by just pulling the tranny or does the cab absolutely have to come off. I dont have the extra 2500 to have it done by them and my extended warranty wont cover it. I cant find hardly any info online or even where the location of this pipe is. Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks
The turbo down pipe (if that's truely the cause) can be cut in half(I've even heard that someone got one out in one piece) to be taken off. An aftermarket 2 piece pipe can be bought for anywhere from $125.00 to probably $250.00 depending on whether it's aluminized or stainless and who makes it.
No $2500 bill.
Ok, so thats the pipe right off the back of turbo. Ive heard of the egr pipes cracking but ive noticed no performance loss. my truck has a egr and dpf delete. So it possible to just unbolt the exhaust, cut the down pipe and replace it with a two piece...sweet.
id be willing to guess up pipes not the downpipe. the up pipes would be a cab off or tranny out repair i think.
Agreed 100% the steam pot whistle sounds does not sound like a sound from the down pipe but that doesn’t mean it’s not the problem. But generally speaking there are more complaints of a loose connection causing fumes in the cab. I have yet to see a bad down pipe personally.
The up pipes are a common issue more so for tuned trucks but even the stock trucks have had the issue. There are now good quality aftermarket up pipes that can be used on stock trucks that are better quality stainless and about twice as thick. If it turns out to be the up pipes I would take a good look at RCD for a quality replacement set if you plan on keeping the truck awhile IMO.
That makes sense. See i havent had noticed any fumes in the cab, and thats what the dealer keeps saying is the problem. I would guess there would be more of an exhaust leak sound than a compressed hissing or whistle. But If i wanted to go ahead and replace the up pipes, How can i change them without the cab off?
