Putting a new distributer in my 460, the oil pump drive "leans" against the side of the opening below the cam gear. My distributer won't go down over it. The hex looks to lined up fairly well but it won't let the dist shaft slide over it. I tried turning the engine with a ratchet while the dist was sitting as far down as it would go and the cam gear was engaged. Is there a trick to getting the oil pump drive shaft to stay in the center of the opening?
that's the way I do it is turn the engine slightly with the dist down against the drive shaft. usually it will just slide over as the bottom of the dist shaft is tapered inwards
Happen to run into that myself. As i typically drop the oil out when I do work like this, I used a dab of grease on the leaning side to hold it more in the center. Worked!

Do you rock it back and forth or turn it one direction?

if all else fails use the starter to turn it. once the distributor is into the gear it will turn and not lose timing position. Just remember to not pull it back out without marking exactly where to put it back in or you will need to turn back to tdc and realign.
