And ... of course the axle I get is a Gen 1.
and I have a Gen 2.
Went to swap the yokes and...
Yep.
I knew things were going to easy.
So, the way to tell a gen 1 from a gen 2 is the gen 1's have the smaller u-bolt style strap, while the gen 2's have the larger beefier yoke with a flat style strap.
Yeah. I had to go to the parts store and luckily the manager there is awesome.
Found a ujoint that has the right caps to fit on my ujoint so I can bolt my axle too it, because the ujoints are just a hair smaller on the gen 1's also.
This basically means that I will have to do a pinion swap here this winter at some point. Joy oh joy.
Ya, you're never supposed to mix n match ring and pinions. It's guaranteed not to last long if you don't swap both.
Don't have a press to change bearings.
If any of you would like to have come help me here in the last 4 days I've been working on this, it mighta went a bit faster.
I don't have a vehicle to go get parts.
I have limited tools to do this with and I have to have my truck out of the barn its in by 12 today to get somebodies vehicle thats in storage out.
You don't have to touch the bearings to change ring gears. Just unbolt the ring gears from the carrier and swap them. You need to do that! Keep the ring and pinion matched set together. You're just asking for trouble if you don't.
As far as helping you, I would be the first one to help you or anybody else, but its not always possible. My truck has been down for two months and I don't see anybody beatin my door down to help, but I don't expect it either. So nut up and fixyour truck right Mr. Pissy!!! LMAO!!!!''!
