Would you drop $1200 on...
A 1997 F350 standard cab 4x4 with 5.8 auto. It is complete minus the box (long bed). Has a frozen alternator and a bad wheel cylinder. Use to be a plow truck. It does have a title and is an XLT. 90k miles. I was looking to upgrade my 1997 F250 with the D60... might as well match the rear end if gearing is different. But could one make the money back on the engine/trans/transfer case and misc body parts? The cab corners are rusty as well as fenders. But interior is decent.

I think you're right on here. I don't see you making a lot on the truck since it's a 5.8 and you're planning on taking the only thing of real value in it (the D60) but I think for that price you could rob the axles out of it, take whatever other little bits and pieces you want and sell or scrap the rest and make a good deal of it back. You could maybe make more than that much back but to do so you're looking at taking a lot more time and parting and piecing out little stuff.

don't forget bumpers. from my recent/current part-out experience, bumpers in good shape are big sellers. I think I priced mine at ~100-150 each pending condition and people snatched them right up. grill and headlights were the same story, but I think I sold them more in the $50 range.
parting is definitely some work but i'd go through it again for if I needed something like a D60 - which I do if I ever get my next project off the ground :-)
i'd also offer just $1000 for it. if its listed at 1200, the seller is only expecting to get $1000 for it anyway...

He was asking $2,000 for the whole truck! haha I said $1,000 as is and he said fine $1200. I figured coming down $800 was a fair price. I might be able to sell the engine pretty quickly actually. My friend is restoring a early bronco... who wouldn't want a 5.8 efi in an early bronco? hmmmm

Lotsa other stuff you could cannibalize. Pull the pump/senders out of the fuel tanks. Sell to a gasser, or pull the pumps and keep the sender/pickup as spares. AFAIK, the resistance on the sender is the same. And replacements are $$$$.
Dang, if I were closer, I'd buy the front tank skid plate; desperately need one for the '85 IDI.
Mirrors; there's always someone looking to switch from one type to another. Or sell with the doors.

I paid 800 for a 95 F350 reg cab 5.8 auto 4wd.(blown up 5.8, unknown E4OD)
Sold the matched axles, t-case, front driveshaft and all associated D60 related parts for $1800.
Sold the Alcoa wheels with tires for $600
Tailgate for $200
Some interior trim pieces for $200
Then scrapped the truck with a pair of D50 TTB axles in the bed for $800
