I have never bought emblems before, are todays reproduced emblems white alum,or are they plastic,,any suggestions on refurb my originals?thanks in advance
I have not yet refurbished mine. Still need to get there. But i would say its worth a shot to try and save the original ones. I struggeld to find decent original ones for my truck and they quite expensive to. I was thinking of giving them a quick sand blast. Paint them silver and paint the inside black again. Maybe even try and sand down and polish rather than painting silver. I am sure someone here has done it before. This is what i want to try so can only give you results once done.
I'm pretty sure those emblems are pot metal. If so your best bet is to have them replated, or bead blast and paint. Powder coating should be an option as well. They do have some powder coats now that look like polished aluminum.
very good so keep the originals, thanks fellas,I asked that ? before but never did get an answer, thats really helpful,Thanks Justin, South Africa that blows my mind

If I get time, I need to finish my Crew Cab's badges. I polished mine with a cloth wheel chucked into an electric drill and used rouge as the polishing abrasive. They shined up pretty nice, except for one small spot where I actually went through the plating. I don't think it will be noticeable when they are on the fender.
Mine are off a '76, so they're a bit different from yours, but I plan on masking the 'highs' where they should be shiny and spraying the rest black. On your style, I read somewhere here in an old thread where the person masked the highs off, then applied the paint with a Q-tip and kind of puddled it, then let it dry.
Those emblems are toast. They'll be good enough for a driver but not good enough for a near show-worthy rig.
"pot metal" is just that.. it's made from whatever is leftover in manufacturing - aluminum, iron , manganese, zinc, etc. ground up, mixed in a pot, and then compressed at high pressure. The pock marks are indicative of the amalgamation corroding and separating.
Painting... 2x with Voca. "pool" the paint with an applicator like an eyedropper. A better tool would be a flow pen.
Even cheaper pot metal material replacements from LMC are $30 each, DC are $30... so wire wheel yours up, spray them black and then carefully sand the paint off the raised edge and be happy.
Thanks fellas, all great info,,,Thanks Montana for your offer,Im leanining towards Rich advice ,wire wheel paint black and sand surface,,,,,I know my badges look rough, but I kinda like the beauty and Beast look,,will see how it goes,at least try: now that you all have given direction
