Rear end rumble

So now that it has gotten colder my truck has developed a new noise. It has a rumble or whine, the colder it is the louder it seems to get. When the temp is 65+ It's hardly noticeable. About 5000 miles ago I changed both rear axle hub seals, the bearings looked fine then so I didn't change them. All I did was pack them with grease and put it all back together then filled the rear end with new oil. I checked the oil level the other day and it's fine and the hubs are dry. I had a rear wheel bearing go bad on a car once and the truck is making a similar noise that the car made. I can't tell if the noise is coming from left right or center. Any ideas?

What kind of grease did you use? Wheel bearing grease is not what you use. You need to use a lithium based grease (white) if anything. Wheel bearing grease won't break down with the gear oil. Lithium will disolve in the gear oil. Alot don't use any thing. The gear oil is what lubricates the bearings.

I know the bearing are lubed with the oil but when I changed the seals it was recommended to lube the bearings with grease to keep them lubed until the oil worked its way out to the bearing. I wonder if the grease actually prevented the oil from reaching the bearings and because the bearings don't have grease seals, spun out the grease and overheated the bearing?
I can't remember, can the bearings be changed independent of the seals? I remember the seals were a real pain in the *** to get out.

You may also want to pull the cover off the diff and inspect the gears. Last year I had a broken pinion gear, it produced a rather intense whine that increased according to speed and load. It was silent when cruising under no load (just off idle at speed), but intense under load.
Note that bearing noise will be less dependent on load and more on speed alone.
