Ok all. I arrived home from that God-forsaken desert country where everyone hates us, last Thurs. I found my wife had finished off the IP. (I knew it was going, still runs just runs rough and stutters a bit.) So I contacted Justin and have a new DB2 and head studs in the works. I picked up a Holset HX35 yesterday and decided to go that route. (ATS and Banks kits don't seem to have what I really want.) My neighbor has a 7.3 idi sitting in his yard so I picked up the block and will be having that gone through instead of pulling the motor out of my truck. (So I can keep mine on the road just a bit longer until it is ready to drop the motor in.) I plan on running the turbo on the inside of my passenger fender, (Thanks DirtyDiesel for the idea), Just a couple of questions to bounce off of you guys.
The oiling system in the holset, does it have to be exactly verical? Otherwise I'm running into an exit for my boost towards the outside of the fender. Now that I think about it, can it be adjusted? (Guess I should have looked better.) I'm running the oil drain line into the fuel pump block off plate and picking up an electric pump. For the supply I'll come off the back of the oil filter housing. I know it's a long haul from there to the oil supply on the turbo, will I need an additional inline pump or something? Anyhow, let me know what you guys think.
Wow someone close, your oil supply line will be fine, it can be as long as needed, its under pressure so no worries there, you can be up to 20*off center for the oil drain. We should get together, and who is going to do your machine work. Davisons?
Yeah, Davidsons. I talked to them yesterday and they sound like they can get most of it done in less than a week! We'll see. Heads look decent so I don't think there will be TOO much to do. If you feel like wrenching let me know!
Thanks for going out there and doing something most of is wouldn't think about doing! I would balance for sure it only costs a couple hundred extra and man does a balanced idi run nice! I would shave .040 off the pistons while they are out too but that's just me.
Well the heads are back and painted, If I could figure out how to post pictures I'll post them. Had the comp springs put in there and since there was only 89,000 miles on the donor motor they didn't need to do to much as far as replacement parts. Pics to come.
Well I've gotten about 100 miles on her and finished up the day before Elk season opened. Needless to say I brought all my tools, oil coolant and spare parts just in case. Not that I thought it would break down but.. Better prepared, than not. Runs like a champ. I have to keep my eye on my EGT's until my turbo is mounted but I'll post a few pics of the build. Keep in mind the lower end was done by the PO less than 40,000 miles ago.
