I have a 2010 with 106000 miles on it. I have to replace my steering box, but ford is out of stock. ford dealer is cheaper than after market, am waiting for box to come in
I also might need a steering gear box. I've been hearing a clunking/popping noise, so I got under there and had a friend move the wheel back and forth with the engine OFF so that I could hear and isoloate the noise. seems like it's coming from my gear box, and I can't see any play in the joints for the steering, only the clunking noise.
If your out of warranty i would really consider a redhead gear box for a replacement. The ford rebuilt steering gear boxes are really not that great. I have heard alot of people actualy complain that the reman steering gears are loose out of the box. They do not use over-sized/custom sized steel ***** in the worm gears as red-head does there for its hard for them to real tight steer box in a reman package. I have a red top in mine now and have been very pleased, my OEM ford steering box went out at around 75,000 miles.
A second vote here for Red head. Don't have one on this truck but on the 7.3 they are the best.
Also, I haven't looked but these may be adjustable. The old ones had an adjustment shaft and a lock down nut right on top. Doing it right required an inch pound torque wrench and removing the air bag but the results were good.
the ford dealer here in Dothan is out or the computer says there are not any in the system and did not know when they would get it. paid for it up front, have contacted red head, thanks for the information
