I put my engine and transmission back in the truck by myself and I guess the shifter hit the exhaust pipe (not touching it now) or something and jammed it maybe. Nonetheless, it's stuck and will not move. Anybody got any ideas on what happened or how to fix it?
More than likely the arm has been pushed far enough to make it disengage the main control valve, not that big a deal.
Drop the pan and unbolt the main control valve, keep track of which bolts go where. Drop the valve down, reposition the shift arm and reinstall the valve body. You need to be sure both the main control valve and kick down valve are properly engaged. They're on the top of the valve so it's a little difficult but not all that bad.
If for some reason you need to remove the shift arm, you'll need to "snake" a 7/8" box end wrench over the kick down arm to get to the nut that holds the shift arm on.
You'll also need to make sure the park linkage is properly reinstalled.
I had to install a new trans arm in my C6 and from start to finish was about a half hour but it was already drained and was out of the truck so that made it easier.
The first picture is the top side of the valve body. The two valves that need to engage the shift and kick down arms are at about the 12 O'clock position.
The second picture was taken from the top side of the trans with the valve body installed (don't ask me how the pic was taken). You can see how the two levers engage the valves.
Thank you. I was hoping it would be something simple but what you said explains it. I think it might have got pushed down during the removal rather than the install. Going in, if anything, it would have been pushed up.
@Mike00.... Okay, I've dropped the valve body and this is what I'm looking at. By the way, I'm out of my comfort zone but am motivated... Anyway, just wanted to verify that all i have to do is loosen that 7/8 nut and then I should be able to rotate the shifter and then install the valve body with the shift and kick down arms engaged? I really appreciate the help..
You shouldn't need to loosen the nut. The shaft has flats machined on it that engage flats in the hole of the arm. All you should need to do is turn it so the arm inside the trans is pointed down and make sure the valve in the valve body is positioned so the notch in the valve engages the pin on the arm.
You also need to make sure the kickdown valve and arm are also engaged. That ones not too bad the arm just touches the end of the valve.
Well all done now and in hind sight all I think I needed to do was push up on that rod thats above the two arms in the picture and rotate the shifter once I dropped the pan... Lesson learned. I connected the linkage and it shifts and clicks down to 1 so we'll see what happens when ever the day comes to finally fire it up. Thanks for the help Mike00.. Mucho appreciation.
