I have been reading some previous posts on what should and should not be used to polish these aluminium pieces. My question is a bit different. The previous owner sprayed the fenders and did not protect these trim pieces as well as he should have. How do I get the overspray off without hurting the coating?
The wheel lip trim is anodized aluminum. Any harsh acid or caustic will tend to destroy the anodizing. You also want to stay away from any abrasive as it will scratch the trim.
I have used laquer thinner to clean overspray off this type trim in the past. I found that a "hotter" thinner worked best. I usually use a shop rag to apply the thinner and rub off the residue.
On occasion I have used 4/0 steel wool instead of a shop rag. It seems to work OK, but use caution.
