my sugestion is to get an LED replacement bulb as when I did the one in my 89 ranger it blew about a month later. www.superbrightleds.com is where I get mine from.
Don't need the tool for this series truck, too old I guess!
Grab the trim ring around the radio and heater controls, yes tabs that hold it on, pull it off (careful now), once its off you'll see the 4 screws holding the radio in.
Remove the 4 torx screws then slide the radio straight out, you'll notice the bracket on back of the radio slides on a track similar to a kitchen drawer.

Thanks for the correction, wasn't sure when they started that setup.
Mine also has went out. Can see the station if you shine a light at a certain angle. On mine (95) would you need this certain tool to get the radio out?

Yes-look for four holes at each corner of the face plate of the radio-those are the holes that the U shaped tool go into. For a DIN receiver.

Nope same as the 87, pull of trim ring, remove screws, slide it straight out.
Unless of course I remember the 87 wrong? it has been quite a while since I've been in the one I have and or messed with its radio.
You can do the radio in the 95 either way. All you are doing by using the torx screws is removing the bracket that holds the radio. Disregard this, I was thinking about my 88 Ranger not the 95 F150 when I typed this, both radio's went out within a two month timeframe.
It is a lot easier to remove the radio from the bracket once it is out of the dash.
Personally, it doesn't bother me to check the radio statin with a flashlight, I don't like a lot of light inside the cab at night anyway. I guess I have driven way to many old trucks that the dash lights didn't work reliably on.
The worst ones are the 80-86 F series, it always seemed like you needed to strike a match to see any gauges even if the dash lights were on.

Reason: Wrong info given, sorry.
Umm. No and no. The trim ring around the radio in a 92-97/97 does NOT reveal screws for the radio. The top is the dash pad that only comes off with the radio out. The lower piece around the heater controls only reveals the screws to remove the heater controls. The only ways to remove it are the tools through the face or removing the glovebox and cluster bezel and reaching inside the dash to release the pins. There are ZERO bolts holding the radio in.

Everything went smooth until I attempted to pull the "face" from the front of the radio. I removed the 2 small screws that secure it but I do not know how to remove the face as it is loose but somewhere in the center is a tab or something holding it.

You got it right on the 87. I do have a problem removing the faceplate with the radio out. I removed the 2 very small screws on the sides of the faceplate but there is something securing it in the middle and I do not want to force it too hard.
