hey guys i want to lower my truck in the rear ,, right now i have about a 1" between the top of shackle and the bed ,, do i need to get a drop bracket for the shackle ?? or what do i need to do
You can use reverse eye springs or remove some of the leaves to lower it. It really all depends on what you have now and and how much you want to lower it. If you want to lower it significantly then you will be getting into axle geometry issues (axle perch angle, etc.)
There have been quite a few articles (on this forum) in regards to lowering the rear on these trucks. You may want to take some time and search through the forum or post as many details that you can on what you have now and what you want to achieve. (Pics are always welcome too).
When you say reverse eye springs*, are you talking about the top spring, the one with bolt holes?
ill do some research on this too
Thnaks
Here's an illustration of a reverse eye leaf spring as well as a photo. The top leaf spring usually curves down from the bottom of the eye. The reversed eye springs curve down from the top of the eye. This brings the actual spring up thus raising the axle which lowers the vehicle. I used these after we installed a heidts IFS kit on my last '51 (which lowered the front of the truck a few inches). The reverse eye springs lowered the truck in the rear so it looked more symmetric (see pic). I remove a few leaves as well which also softened the ride.
No....... you don't "reverse" anything on your stock springs.
The cheapest way to lower your truck would be to remove every other leaf in your original spring. Assuming they are stock. If that is not low enough, you can move the frt spring hanger up to the top of the frame rail. It will lower it approx. 2".
Get a catalog from Mid-Fifty and they have a page dedicated to how to lower your truck and what method will lower it so many inches.
