Trace the positive cable from the battery to the starter relay. Pull the rubber boot off of the relay & jump 12 volts to that pin. If the relay doesn't click, replace it.

It should crank so be sure it's in park or neutral before you do this test.

The starter relay is about 10 inches away from the battery. The relay closes & sends voltage to the starter solenoid, which is part of the starter.

BTW, if this is an auto trans have you tried shifting to neutral when it wont crank?

If it cranks in neutral, the park/neutral safety switch is the problem.

Starter relay and solenoid are both same unit, replaced with new today and still have same problem. Truck is manual trans. I just don't get what could cause this problem.

Heres how the start circuit is wired with a manual trans.

From start pin of the ignition switch to the clutch safety switch. This switch is closed when the clutch is depressed.

Next up is the starter relay. This is the slip on/off wire with the rubber boot and red/light blue stripe wire

If you look under the dash near clutch master push rod you'll see the clutch safety switch. These wires are also red/light blue stripe.

It looks like you have a flaky clutch switch that isn't always closing or a flaky ignition switch.

Changing the switch is very simple. Remove the plastic steering column shroud, the electrical connector & the 2 anti-theft screws. I used a pair of vice grips on the screws.

If you have an ohm meter & want to test the switch do this:

Connect your ohm meter to 37 yellow (batt) & 32 red/light blue. Circuit should close only when the key is turned to start. Try it a dozen times.

If you replace the switch, be sure the hole in the switch drops onto the pin in the column.

To remove the steering column shroud remove the 2 recessed screws from the bottom shroud. Squeeze the bottom shroud & remove the upper.

I'm begining to suspect the module (name, anyone?) on the distributer. Hot engine, no start, cool engine= start.

If it was a warm crank & no start the ignition module would be at the top of the suspect list. But jcar486 sez it isn't even cranking.
