So did you actually go back and find the old rim split in two along the groove, or are you guessing? There's a chance that the lug centric rims had those acorn lugnuts that were just a tad too shallow and the lugnuts didn't properly torque the wheel to the hub. That could explain the sheared lugnuts.

I actually went back up the highway and found the outside part of the rim sheared all the way around. Kind of like cutting a bagel in half. I am positive it was the rim with groove because we checked the other three and they had no groove.
Wow, that gives a whole new meaning to the term "split rims" I had a similar experience with my old 6.9 with a 11 foot Lance cabover, blew a left front tire at 65 MPH on I-10 in New Mexico. Swapped lanes and tore off the running board, but like you, we didn't crash and nobody got hurt. Been a lot more careful about checking tire/wheel equipment since that incident.
Boy we are getting ripped off in the states. Would love to travel up there. Have to talk to my buddies. Only a few of us left after all these years. I always asked my son about his after market rims because he tows 40 foot. Its a heavy tow hauler. He's had know problems but I don't trust most after market wheels either.
Very interesting. I had a similar issue with my brakes. BOTH of my caliper bolts came out and the caliper wedged in the wheel between it and the rotor. Similar action was when your wheel fell off, sharp pull, bad brakes...
It too gouged the wheel. They got replaced as well.

If you are ever interested and coming up for a hunt I could give you some good areas to go to. Keep that in mind. As for the aftermarket wheels, it was my negligence in not realizing what effect that marking of the rim could do. Its one of those hard lessons we like to avoid.
Them aftermarket rims with the Chinese acorn lugs probably did it
Nothing wrong with the rims. It was the groove that was cut into it that caused this. My buddy had the same issue with a stock rim that this happened to.
Glad it all worked out ok for you. That would cause a pucker or two.
good to hear it all worked out and everyone is safe. now lets see the new wheels, you know how we love pics of new parts.
New wheels and tires. General Grabber AT2 275/65R/18. Handle really good, camper felt more stable. Not as good as my Michelin AT2 in the rain but wayyyy better in the snow.
