AIR SHOCKS - Up Front!!???

Hey all,

I have another question for you. I’m trying to figure out how to add in a set of air shocks up front. Yes you read that right… up front. I have already added an add a leaf, but with the additional 350lb bumper, and 138lb winch the front is like driving with a plow all the time, and some what bouncy, even with the add a leaf on the 350. I am not really wanting to get all new springs for the truck, but I know that is the other option. I planned on fabbing up a simple dual mount utilizing the stock mounts so I can run the air shock in the OEM position and then run the Bilsteins on either side. The aftermarket dual shock mounts will not cut it… will not take the added load of the air shocks.

Some may say stay away from them, but we have actually had great luck with them on a few trucks that were even bagged, they would eliminate the bounce of the bags when loaded heavy with a 5er or in bed camper. The nice part is you can adjust the ratio with air pressure and load, which sort of is like tuning your suspension to how you feel fit.

What do you all think?

I’m about to order up a set, considering the monroes are only 70$, if the result is a failure then I lost a couple hours and 70$, which is about the same it would take me to go get a heavier spring rate leaf from the junk yard.

I would like to comment I have a 250 that I had an add a leaf on the original 250 springs, once I did a SAS it rode like shat, it also had a heavy bumper and winch but probably 150-200 lbs lighter. I'm well aware the 250 springs were originally rated different for the torsional load of the TTB. And were much stiffer than my current setup. So that being said I don’t want to go too stiff and get a shotty ride out of it, I’d like to eliminate the bounce out of the front, and it sure rides nice and soft now, but a little too soft for me, and sags a tad too much for me as well. Rolls more than I’d like it to in the corners. I know this is exactly what is to be suspected when adding weight up front, but I’m trying to alleviate a bit of the symptoms… tighten up the front end so it doesn't drive like a late 90 ford expedition.

Good point. I highly doubt they are not here... I have service dozens of trucks with them all the way around. Even so if a cop can nab me for that I'm sure I will have a whole nother world of hurt in tickets coming.

Since I have not seen any comment on it yet, I think I'll give it a shot, I'm only talking 100-125 lbs of lift on each side which is probably about 10-25 psi on a shock, not the full 550 they can deliver per side....

Its not like I'll be stressing the mount by any means. Heck I bet it take 60-100lbs of force just to compress the Bilsteins when installing them.
