Upgrade Exhaust

Hello Guys!

I have a 1987 F150 5.0 Litre E4OD XLT Lariat 2WD and I am going to install full-length headers and a "true dual" exhaust.

I want to use 2.25" from the collectors, without cats, and terminate the exhaust below the rear bumper. I have dual gas tanks so I do not know how this will work.

One of the headers will have the O2 bung and the sensor will be installed.

I want to drive to the exhaust shop with just the headers which will be around 50 miles.

Will this cause any problems or "ruin" anything? I will also remove the smog pump and the plumbing for it and buy a shorter serpentine belt.

I am not concerned about the noise as some diesel trucks are very loud.

Also, I am installing a complete ignition system: Distributor, Ignition Module, Coil and Spark Plug wires all either MSD or Mallory.

Any suggestions and advice are most welcome.

Thanks!

Mark

P.S. I just returned from the muffler shop and with all of the work and material it is only $275 and these guys are very good. I forgot to ask what headers are popular. I was searching and I did see a set with the O2 bung installed but I neglected to write the information down. Ooops!

I drove my 96' open manifold and open headers for for closer to 100 miles and my computer is a lot more picky than yours. No problems other than the god awful drone in the cab. But really it sounds good lol definitely got some looks. 2.25 is good for true duals you could goto 2.5 but nothing more. I run 3" single. What muffler and cat setup are you looking at? I run MSD everything except for the wires, i use ford racing wires, can't beat them and there the only wires that won't burn from the heat of the headers.

Take it easy on the gas while driving with open headers. Be easy on it otherwise you'll be asking for a ticket.

As far as pipes, you didn't say if this truck was a 4x4 or not. If it is, run them to the passengers side (put the cats/mufflers under the bed), side by side and then have the drivers side pipe cross back over in front of the big tank and then out the back. If it's not, the run them on each side and out the back. The small tank might still get in the way though, so if it does, do what I said above.

Make sure the o2 sensor is installed in the header and connected and temporarilly bolt on a couple feet of pipe with turndowns to the flanges for the trip to the exhaust shop, that will keep fresh air from contaminating the readings at the O2 sensor and messing up the mixture.

Thanks for the information!

No cats just straight from the collectors into 12" Cherry-Bomb Glasspacks and Stainless Steel Tips. I thought that I would use 2.25" to create some back pressure.

Thanks for the important information.

If I understand correctly then the "extensions" should be straight out of the collectors and terminate at 90 degrees pointing to the ground?

Thanks!

Mine is shorty's custom 2 1/2 y pipe then 3" into dynomax race bullet then exits out the passenger side before the rear tire. I'm going to re do it w/ long tubes tho and have duals exiting both sides before the rear tire

Hello FordYoungGun35.

What would I ask for at either Napa or O'Reilly for the Ford Racing Wires? Would you happen to have a Part # ? Also, are they pre-cut?

After a lot of research I think that I will use Shorty Headers with ceramic coated chrome. Without cats do you think 2.5" pipe will work efficiently as I am only installing 12" Cherry Bomb Glasspacks?

Thanks!

Why 2 Bungs?

Hello Conanski.

After a lot of research I have changed my mind and will use short headers. I am looking at Pace Setter #72C1322.

My question is that the picture shows a bung on both collectors. What are they used for?

I will run the exhaust straight from the headers to 12" Cherry Bomb Glasspacks. Will 2.5" provide enough back pressure?

Thanks!

I have used those to cheaply replace cracked manifolds. I used the 5.8 versions bung on right is for egr on mine. IDK if they have that pair set up for air in manifold. My pair eliminated it. All your truck "needs" is 2.25. Id be more concerned with scavenging then back pressure. Gotta keep the heat up and it moving fast out the pipes.

Boonslick, what are you paying for the shorties if you don't mind me askin?

Here's the wires http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...38374916192310

You'll be okay with 2.25 or 2.5 just personal preference, the sound tone definitely changed switching from 2.25 to 3

Then all you have to worry about is getting the pipe bent around the gas tank and between it and the driveshaft.

why is everyone so obsessed with "true duals"?

you will lose low end/midrange torque with true duals.

long tubes, y pipe, enjoy.
