Hello people of FTE!
I want to purchase a code reader to help with projects as I am chasing a check engine light every other month. First it was the torque converter then it was the boost control now it's on again and I can't wait to see the new protect.
Has anyone used the U-Scan devise on their 7.3 PSD?
Do you like it?
What real time displays does it have (trans temp, oil temp, EGT)?
Thanks guys for all the help!
Also, let me know if you have had good luck with other scanners.
The Actron U-scan is a normal OBDII scanner. It does not (as far as I can tell) pick up the Ford specific codes our trucks put out. It will pick up the generic codes that all OBDII scanners pick up.
For your truck, a ford specific scanner is going to be the best diagnostic tool.
What Ford specific scanners do you recommend?
Do any of them offer real time monitoring of vitals?
There are many expensive brand name self contained units (Snap-On, Mac, etc.). The one that is highly recommended here (and the one I have) requires a laptop to work with it. It is the Auto Enginuity program with the Ford bundle. The AE program can read and display live (real time) sensor data as well as give you measurements and graphs over time. You can expand the program with other vehicle brands in the future.
There are many threads here that will show you how to use the program to diagnose problems with your ford vehicle. I bought my copy from Clay at Riff Raff Diesel.
No, I don't sell or get commission on the program.
Auto Enginuity is the way to go. Not only is it going to pull the codes you are setting, it has the ability to monitor the sensors and even data log them so that you can do a more complete diagnosis of whats going on.
or...download the TORQUE PRO or CAR GAUGE PRO..app, and then order up the BAFX bluetooth device needed. 25 buks and can read all codes, run live data, set up different gauges...etc AWESOME!
On your 2002 (like mine) Torque app should be fine. When I used it on a 2000 model it just killed it on connection. Just FYI. I never heard of UScan, but it looks similar. Throw yourself on that grenade, buy it and let us know if it can read 7.3 diesel codes.
I have a 2000 and actually just ordered one of the elm 327 Bluetooth connections and planned on downloading the torque app for iPhone because it looked kinda cool. What exactly do you mean by "killed it on connection". I don't want to do anything that will harm the truck. Thanks.

As soon as I attempted to connect to the truck with my phone, the truck turned off. Just like with the key. Removed BT dongle from truck and it started fine. Inserting the dongle is not the problem, connecting via Torque was the trigger. Did this routine a couple times until it sank in that it just wasn't going to work. No harm is done, just did not work on that truck. YMMV. The truck was Al's 2000 Excursion at the NorCal GTG at Andy's. Maybe the PATS system on the X was the problem.
Works fine on mine, a 2002. If it works on your truck Torque is pretty cool indeed!
Got the U-Scan in the mail today.
Very easy to set up! Downloaded app on phone and connected via Blu Tooth.
Gave me a basic code and had to pay for an upgrade to the app if I wanted to know what the code was and if I wanted to reset the check engine light.
Spent sometime playing with it right when I got it but had to leave for my lobster dive.
When I got out of the water I tried using the U-scan to see real time vitals. This is when things got a little weird. The app gave me the definition of the code (torque converter staying locked) the. It put the rig in limp mode. Engine running ruff and no fuel peddle response. Pulled over unplugged u-scan and turned off ignition. Turned truck back on and everything was fine.
I have some free time Sunday so I will dive into this even more.
Subscribed, curious to see what you find out. I'm probably going to spent the money and get the AE from Clay. The AE can do injector buzz test, I believe cylinder compression and much much more. Still learning it though.
Cylinder Rotational Velocity and Cylinder Contribution Test. The CPS tells the computer exactly when each cylinder is TDC, so if one arrives a little late, the cylinder before it wasn't pushing hard enough. The CCT is pass/fail for each cylinder, but the CRV gives a value for each cylinder in PERcent DELiniation, or PERDELs.
Simple terms: Each cylinder gets a number - like being rated on a scale of 1 to 10. The higher the number, the worse a cylinder is. The most common cause of a high PERDEL number is a bad injector.
