Mine bit the dust last night. Apparently the strain of the e-fans was more than it could bear (towing heavy and was the first time they ever stayed on for more than a minute or two)
In a nutshell fans had been on for about half an hour towing over rolling hills, when the fans kicked off everything got super bright and my volt gauge went right over to the 17-18 range, couldnt pull over, made it about 3/4 of a mile, smelled something hot and no more alternator.
Wondering if i should just replace it, is there a H.O. version? If there is a higher output available i may do that, otherwise plan is to rebuild it and have em spice it up a lil'
I just replaced mine a week or two ago.
My understanding is that the stock is 130 amps on my '94 idi, but that some on here have said they have gotten by with only 95 amp alternator.
They do make a 160 amp alternator for factory "Ambulance Equipped". So this maybe the option for you to look at? A little pricier though.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the amp draw of the electric fan to know if you need to large alternator.
