which rear axel?

Okay I'm here to bugs you guys again. Of course you guys know I have a 1964 f100. My rear differential is a heavy duty one, 8 lugs. I found a 5 lug that came off a 66. All complete for 250. But I want to put power brakes on. Should I get the 66 with a 5 lug and add an after marketconversion kit? Or just get a newer rear differential that has disc brakes and use the power brakes from that truck? What do you guys recommend? Thanks!!

1964 Ford F100s don't have 8lug Danas on the back. Do you have 5 or 8 lugs on the front?

5 up front. Original owner took the bed off and put a platform on it as well switched the rear to a 8 lug.

$250 for a complete 5 lug rear end is to much money IMO. I see them all over the place for $75-100.

I bought a complete one for $75.

You need to consider what engine and tranny you have an the use of your truck so you get a rear end with the proper gearing.

I thought about it but since you mention it, I'll check out the junk yards. I just happened to stumble upon this when looking for a short bed. It's been tough. I find them all over except AZ.
Back to the rear differential.

What about be the best set up? Find a donor that has power and use the power brakes from the same donor or purchase an older vehicle and just upgrade them?

Be aware that any newer axle will not simply bolt up. At least minor modifications will be required to the truck and/or axle.

Hi there Madrid,

Well, a couple of ideas for thought...having 5 lug up front and 8 lug in the rear will make things interesting if you
have a flat one day...I doubt you want to carry two different spares! I think you said your old truck is an
F100 which was originally the Ford 9 inch. I think you need to find one of them, or else you have a
lot of work trying to redo the front to match the rear-and the F250's are more limited in rim/wheel choices than
the 5 lugs are. (IMHO)

The old F250's use an 8 lug Dana 60 rear end-there were several different versions-with minor differences, but all
were drum-style brakes. The 65's and 66's are a little different from lets say a 1972, with the later ones having
slightly wider drums for improved braking, and different differential yokes-the 1966 was a ten spline for instance,
yet the '72 was a 29 spline-simply involves the use of a conversion u-joint. If I'm not mistaken (with DANA 60's),
anything up to a '72 will bolt in, but I heard that the '72's and up were a little wider (I may be wrong on that though).
