What year did Ford start using hardened valve seats to eliminate the need for leaded gas? And would I benifit from a lead substitute in my bone stock (ex. ignition & coil) 1972 F100 302??

I have always wondered about the lead substitue. I had old heads I was getting pocket ported and asked if I needed hardened seats. The guy told me they would restrict so unless I was going to do alot of driving not to worry. He said the lead sub was a waste of money. The seats would last just as long without it. He figured 40-50 thousand miles without any problems. Maybe someone else can confirm his thoughts.

Well this thing has 297 k on it and it does fine, but I have only put on about 10 k of those, and I don't know if the previous owner had used it or not. I don't have any manuels or any thing, but it doesn't say "unleaded only" on the gauge or on the cap....
