Gentlemen--question for the gurus (Aloro,et al) I replaced my 2003 F150 with a beautiful 2000 Expy, 153000 mi.-- 4.6 with 4R70W-- and loving it, but I've got the infamous tranny shudder. Had the full flush and filter change done (14 qts.)2 weeks ago but not the transfer case. It didn't correct the shudder. I've read all the posts back to Dec. 2012 and have seen several posts of users adding other additives to their trannys. I've also read the manual stating to NOT add any additives. So my question to you knowledgeable people is-- will any additive correct the problem without doing harm, or is there another fix short of a rebuild/replace. Will the shudder continue to get worse, and if not corrected will it do damage down the road? I will retire soon and I am so in love with the truck I would like to keep it 'till I can't drive any longer. Thanks for any input.

Hi Jerry,
I had a the same issue with my 2002 Expy with 4r70W tranny...it shudders everytime the torque converter locks up (between 45-55) I think it's the sign that the torque converter is wearing out and will need replacement soon...however, after posting the issue in the forum (expeditionforum) a lot of guys recommend this:
I was skecptical at first but I did it and the shudder was gone...I drove it to California from Oregon (where I live) and back and the shudder didn't come back....I had the rig for 2 years after the friction modifier until I sold it a few months ago....the guys at the forum said that if after you put the friction modifier and the shudder came back, that's when you seriously have to consider replacing the torque converter and or rebuild transmission.
the 4r70w is notorious for being unreliable.. if you can just replace the tranny with 4r100 ones.
Alloro, I got hold of the shop that did the flush, they used Mercon V. He also told me they did not change the transfer case fluid as it appeared to be good.
I had the same problem with my 4R100, shifting from third to overdrive. I felt like I was driving over Bots Dots that warn you of a stop ahead.
It started at about 60-75k. I had it fully flushed with an additive and it helped but didn't eliminate the issue.
Probably a month later, I drained a quart and added a qt of Slick 50 tranny additive. Within a couple of days, the shutter was gone.
It has never come back but at every tranny oil change, I now use a qt of Lucas Oil additive as the Slick 50 isn't readily available at auto parts stores now.
Now over 310k and still no shutter.
Thank you r2miller for the advice. I would still like to know if the shudder will cause damage if it continues? It seems to stop if I just back out of the throttle a bit
