Hi there, the tranny on my '97 Expedition (E4OD) seems to be acting funny. It's giving me a slight jerky feeling as I'm accelerating. It seems to be shifting fine. I've learned that the torque converter on these things has some issues, and that there's some TSB's concerning them. How can I tell if I need a new torque converter, or a whole new tranny? Or? I could go to a dealer I suppose for a dx, but I feel they might just recommend a new tranny anyway.
Thanks..
You could have a torque converter shudder, it feels like your driving on a washboard road when you accelerate lightly or when upshifting into 3rd or OD. You might try a fluid change before getting too carried away. Sometimes it is just worn out friction modifiers in the fluid. Use only Mercon III -- NOT Mercon V or any fluid that says it will replace both.
Thanks for the reply. I did just change the fluid and filter, I was using Amsoil. Now I've got Dex-3. It is still present, sometimes very noticeable, sometimes not there at all. I guess you could say it feels like driving on washboard, the way it kinda feels jerky. Not sure if I should just keep driving it till it gets real bad or not.... I know I better do something before I decide to tow!
Try a bottle of lucas oil transmission no slip. My tranny would slip horribly and rev up in between shifts put in a bottle and it almost completly stoped it.
