Serious 4x4 problems...NEED HELP!!!

I was out at Rednecks With Paychecks this past weekend and until this event, I've never needed to use 4x4 for anything serious. Besides having the typical problem of getting my X into 4x4 (motor is possibly going out and thank goodness for manual wheel locks as an alternative), the real problem happened after I took my first baby crawl into a pit (mud/water never reached the running boards....don't judge). Once I safely exited, the truck just died! The engine wouldn't hold RMPs to keep it running. I had to 2 foot drive the truck back to camp then put it back in 2WD and everything was ok again.

I need ideas on what y'all think is the problem. I've heard IAC valve, the pumps are over powering the engine in 4x4 or possibly mass flow air sensor.

Any ideas will help or if someone has experienced this before.
Thank you!

is it possible that you got water in some wiring connectors or somewhere else and it is causing issues?

If it drove fine before you went swamping..........and not after.....I would take a guess that letting it air dry a few days might fix it!

Open up the air filter, make sure you didn't clog it up with mucky water. While you're in there clean up the MAF.

I checked the air filter after arriving back at camp for that reason. I discovered that mud splashed up into the engine bay and hit just about everything except the filter.

But got back into the X earlier to go somewhere and learned that if I throw it quickly into drive, the truck now dies....I feel this is becoming more of an IAC valve. (Had an IAC valve problem in my 5-speed ZX2)

Still keeping my options open though.

Is that you standing next to your Ex?? How tall are you??

Anyway, getting mud up in the engine like that is tough on everything. I would start by taking it to the car wash and crawling underneath and spraying everything off, then take it for a good long drive to dry off. I'd let it dry out all the way before trying to do any more diagnosing, as there is no telling what can happen when mud gets in those electrical connectors.

How fast were you going when you hit that puddle?

I'm 5'6" and my X stands just under 9 feet tall
I crawled into the pit then gassed it once I was in. I didn't feel the need to get 4+ tons stuck.

I need to get it washed still, but haven't driven it since Sunday so maybe with it sitting for a day things have improved a little.
I'll still move forward with replacing the IAC valve since it's probably the original (13 yrs old) and that's an easy task I can do myself.

I'll post again if things still aren't working or new problems appear.

That's one tall Excursion!! You're only two inches shorter than my wife, but look like a midget in the picture!

IAC is easy to do, but it could be a bunch of stuff. If you're doing that get a bottle of Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner and clean the mass air flow sensor in the intake plenum. I might have a known good IAC valve in the barn if you want to try swapping it with mine. I think they are like $100 or so, and they can be cleaned too. Typically they just get black soot buildup on them.
