Tonight I drove a nearly new F-150. The person who let me drive it apologized because it was "a basic truck." Well, I got in it, and there was no choke ****, the ignition switch was in the wrong place and the starter button was gone! What's more, the suspension didn't creak when I hit bumps, it would do an honest 60 mph, and I didn't have to shout at the passenger (my wife) to hold a conversation!
I'm telling you, they just don't make them like they used to!
Right on, Don. I got to ride in a new F-150 and it's got all sorts of new-fangled doo-dads like 'lectricity and stuff. Why, they even had a heater in it! I kept asking the driver to stop for gas 'cuz I couldn't hear any spashing around in the tank behind the seat. Then he ups and turns on some steeereeo contraption with a kinda noise that just about busted my ears. Said somethin' about it was a country tomb?!? Kids these days.
I hear ya! It's like they went and made all these "improvements" on the little things that gave our trucks character and made them fun to drive.
The real future shock to me though, are the prices! A brand new pickup in 1954 could be had for a mere $1300 bucks. now we're somewhere up around $30,000?
A new truck was $1300 in 1954 (before my time) and had risen to $2700 in 1972 (my time!) and now look at them!! I wish I had my '72 again. It took me all over the USA in 1973 and was great! If I wanted to tune it up, I opened the hood and climbed in and stood on the ground!! Try that today...............
I know what you mean. I love the nostalgia of the "oldies"and driving a piece of history that no longer looks like every other truck on the road. At the same time, however, I do love the creature comforts and engineering advances of the new ones. Be nice to have one from each era at the same time so you could bounce back and forth depending on mood or need! Yeah, that'd be nice, but....
Ohh yes, Them new F-150's are nice. I still like my 1960 better than my 1997 but it's nice to be able to park next to other cars and not worry and I needed a vechicle for the salt on the roads here. It's not the same with all that plastic and poping the hood to find it covered up with even more plastic. I can still change the plugs in my 1960, no way with 1997(although the new ones only need replaced every 100,000 miles). Anyways, I know how you feel when these trucks started using plastic dashes it was an end to an era. -4speed
I friend of mine showed me his late-model F150, and I noticed the radio had "FM" on it -- I've heard of AM, but what happened to BM, CM, DM and EM? The radio was already falling apart though -- had a crack in it so big a 33 1/3 would almost fit...
