Differentials

How do I determine what diff my X has in the rear? I think they're Sterling 10.5's, I know mines a LS from the lookup, but that's all I know. I think the front is a Dana 60.

About to swap fluids in both diffs and need the info to get the right fluids...

You have a 10.5 rear and if you are sure you have LS then you need 75w140 in the rear with limited slip modifier added. I would check the axle tag on the differential and be sure though, you don't want to put modifier in an open.

You would not have a Dana 60 Front unless it was changed by PO, it should be a Dana 50. But regardless they both take 75w90

If you do put modifier in an open you would basically just be wasting your money and have more slippery oil. Like Christina said; it's not a 60.

From what I understand, don't use friction modifier with synthetic 75/140. Someone might want to confirm.

Some already have it and some don't but you will need it in most cases with a LSD rear end. Read the label.

Ok another question, do Dana 50's and 60's have the same spec covers? Looking at aftermarket replacements for mine as it's rusting up good.

What brand 75w140 is recommended? Also is the modifier from Ford only? How much of that needs to go in?

I have a seep on my rear, so I figured it's as good a time as any to replace the thing with an aftermarket cover.

You can use any brand. Mobil 1, Amsoil and Royal Purple make excellent synthetic gear lubes. The friction modifier is added to reduce the sensation of the LSD working. I currently run Royal Purple with no modifier and like the fact I can feel it engaging. You will not do any damage if you do not add the modifier - it only makes the clutches slip more which reduces the sensation of it engaging and also how much it can be affective. You can use any modifier you choose if you decide to run it. If you do decide to run it - add a small amount at a time until it 'feels' the way you want it to. After you add the fluid - drive in a figure 8 pattern a couple of times in each direction to work the fluid through the differential.

Probably not and you only need regular 90 wt up there. Read the tag.

Would the letter "LS" be on it? Or is there some sort of way of deciphering the code on said tag?

Get the 08 and up F 250 rear diff. aluminum cover, it's cheaper than after market. Do a search over the 6.0 L to get all the correct bolts lengths.

I too had a leak on my rear and the front was really rusty
I had ordered these up a while ago.
Polished Aluminum Ford Super Duty F 250 F 350 Excursion Differential Cover Kit | eBay

I just put them on last weekend. Seem very quality, and fit my 00 perfectly. Took nearly a gallon per diff, as these have a bit more capacity. And they look great!

Went with the AFE one for the rear, I like that it has it's own fill and drain holes and a dipstick also includes a Viton o-ring. Looks cool from the rear. Thinking of doing the front next, they're not cheap but are very easy to maintain, look good and are functional. Pics shortly.
