Getting ready for winter

How do you prep your Diesel for (northern MN) winter? I just picked up my first Diesel and I am looking for tips for a -30f nights. A buddy that just sold his told me all I need is Howes Diesel treatment, and plug it in. Any other tips and tricks? What gauge 100 foot cord should I carry in the cab?

What engine do you have?

I have never heard of Howes treatment, but Diesel Service Power Kleen (White Jug) is the recommended fuel anti gel.

I change all of the filters. I usually start running fuel treatment when daily highs are in the 30's. Load test the batteries and check/clean all connections. I usually switch from 15w-40 to either 10w-30 or 5w-40 syn. Makes cold starting alot better.

I have the 6.0. Got myself a timer and cord for the block heater and I'm heading out tomorrow to get the treatment. Im going with Diesel Service Power Kleen (White Jug) because everyone says they use it. Just had the oil changed and will probably hit up the batts this weekend or next.

Thanks for the tips

I live in the mountains west of Calgary and use Diesel Kleen in the White bottle every fill in winter and run 5W-40 T6 year round.

As for an extension cord... for 100 feet I have a 12guage cord. Not that the block heaters need this, but for that length of cord you will get more of the power to the block heater without the resistance loss that goes to heating the ground.

I run the the block heater on a timer and have it turn on about 2hrs. before anticipated use...

For really cold nights you can also use a magnetic heater attached to the bottom of the oil pan.. Have not used this yet, but do use it on my tractor to warm up the oil before trying to start it...

Howes Diesel Treatment With Anti-Gel (Quart) - HOW103062

MY dad drove semi for 35 years and used to alternate between Howes and Power Service, as one would go on sale one week, the other the next week.

I use Power Service in my 6.0
