Shift cable removal?

Hey!
Something broke inside the column and I'm trying to remove it so I can see what happened. Can someone tell me how to remove the shift cable from the lower bracket? The manual says the press on some clip, but I can't see anything to release the cable. Help! This is on a 97 F250, E40D.
Thanks!

IIRC the clip is part of the bracket and on the drivers side towards the firewall, hard to get at. You just need to push it and release it. I fought it forever before I finally figured it out too. Then I realized it was easy. I'm not real clear on my explanation, but you'll get it.

Got it! Basically, there is a nub on the cable that locks into the metal bracket. Just slip a pick I'm the hole and out it comes!

Ok, so here's why I pulled the column to begin with:
Somewhere between the lock cylinder and the ignition switch, something either broke or came undone. It looks like a nylon or plastic actuator that slides when you turn the key. Is this a common thing that fails? Is there parts for it? What type of puller to get the wheel off?

Glad you got it. I didn't explain it real well, but its easy now that you got it, isn't it?

I rigged up a puller out of a couple I had around to pull mine off.

I'm not much help on your problem though. Here's a bump up top.

I just fixed this same thing on a Town Car. The key became disconnected from the ignition switch. I could turn the key to any position and the engine kept running.

There is a plastic slider. I bought a new one from a Ford dealer for $19. I took it back when I was done because the original one was perfect.

There is a steel pin that connects the key to the plastic slider. It fell out when the lock cylinder started to come apart. I put in a new lock cylinder and put the pin back in place. It's working fine now. I did have to take the column pretty much all apart to get to the pin. It takes snap ring pliers to remove a few of the snap rings, but all in all it wasn't that hard to do once the column was out of the car.

Sounds exactly like mine. However, the upper part is still connected to the lock cylinder, but the lower part that actuates the ignition switch dosen't move when turning the key. Do you remember what the part was called?
