So I walked into just about a free 6.0l intercooler, Ive read in the past that it was an upgrade and I just read an article where they are junk..
Im installing a van turbo in a few weeks, Have clays 6/6 wheel and a tune and the normal intake/exhaust mods.. Do I order the boots and install or should I scrap it and double the money I paid for it..
I do tow 90% of the time.. all over the country so mountains and flatland..
Will also be upgrading the injectors soon, so while I have it what should I do?
If it has the plastic end tanks then I would scrap it, if its got the aluminum end tanks then IMO you should keep it and see if you can get it in there! i cant remember if its a direct bolt on or not...

All stock 6.0 Intercooler have plastic tanks. All aluminum versions are aftermarket. You need one 3"-3" boot to install it. Stock oil-to-air trans cooler lines may need to be modded for clearance. The 6.0 is taller and slightly thicker. 7.3's have 3.25" necks on both sides. 7.3 intercoolers came in all aluminum; and with plastic tanks also.

Here is a pic of a 7.3 intercooler with plastic tanks. The pic is one from an Excursion. IIRC, they started using them in late 2001 or 2002. My '01 was all aluminum, also. It was built in mid Oct'00. Note: Both necks are the same size 3.25".... 6.0 IC's have one neck 3.0" and one 3.25".... I have a 6.0 IC laying in my garage.
So Roland is the 6 leaker inter-cooler worth the swap? Or is the 7.3 fine?
I'm not Roland, but adding my two cents, i'll say kind of.
It all depends on how much a person pays to obtain the 6.0L cooler. If a person can get it cheap, then yeah, it might be. I say "might" because I've read posts where people have stated the only time you'll see a difference after adding the 6.0 L intercooler is when you're towing up a grade, and then you might see a 100 degree difference.
In all honesty, I've never seen a temp difference.

I agree with Stewart's post. I ran my 6.0 IC for about a year. It did shine at higher boost levels. I went with an aftermarket all aluminum 6.0 IC that was even larger and though it helped tremendously, it still shines at the "high end".
What I've heard is the Banks 6.0L cooler is the ticket. But the price isn't! If you can find one in the wrecking yard cheap I'd get it.
I have the Banks 6.0 Techni-cooler. I does perform better than the stock 6.0 upgrade. I saw a drop across the board. ~25* cooler EGTs at cruise, ~200* in my race tunes, and over 100* towing a 10k fiver at highway speed. I bought mine for $965 (now ~ $100 higher), with the adaptor hoses and clamps (required due to larger 3.5" necks). I did not like the silicone boot that came in the kit, so I mig welded exhaust pipe adaptors to the IC pipes and went to 3.5" straight Dieselsite boots to match my other ones. I have wire rings on both ends of the IC pipes to prevent blow off.
