Remove Steering Damper?
I went off-roading a week ago and within five minutes, I have already chewed up the steering damper. I got the steering damper hung up on a rock slap causing it to be bent slightly and pushed back out of the way. It is no longer hanging directly below the axle anymore but more so right behind it. So far there have been no steering problems as a result of this incident. I took a look under there and tried to understand the steering damper's main purpose and could not think of a rational reason. So I'm writing this message to find out the true purpose of the steering damper and if it will cause any problems with its removal.
Also I have heard around town that there is a steering damper relocation kit that places it on top of the axle than below it. Any additional clearance under my truck would be most welcomed.
So in short, what is the steering damper's job? Is there a easy way to relocate it? Can it be removed completely without adversely affecting handling on-road and off-road?
Thanks in advance!

To "damper" the harsh stuff so it does't resonate into your steering wheel, think of it as a shock, you hit a curb, instead of the steering wheel whipping around its slower to react with the shock on there. Also, eliminates some of the vibration you get in the wheel.
It really isn't needed if your running stock tires, when you run bigget tires, it helps a little.
Not to technical, but Im on my way out.
